SPMS Uniform and Dress Code

South Pointe Middle School has a mandatory uniform policy. If you wish to discuss your child’s participation in the Uniform Policy, please contact the main office to schedule an appointment with the Assistant Principal for an exemption. The requirements of the SPMS uniform policy are as follows:

Shirts:

• Uncollared T-shirts that are plain solid white, black, blue, gray; NO graphics of any kind

• Collared button down and Polo Shirts: long or short sleeved; NO graphics

• SPMS Spirit Shirts may be worn any day.

• Wednesdays: wear your “Where are you going?” college shirt.

• SPMS Spirit Shirts and college shirts are the only graphic shirts allowed on campus.

• P.E. clothes may only be worn during P.E., not in the classroom.

• Shirts may not be more than one size larger than a student's measured shirt size.

• Sweatshirts: Only one size larger than the measured size of the student.

• Hoods and hats may not be worn in class.

Pants/Shorts/Capris: NO holes, rips or tears.

• Solid Color. Jean style pants are acceptable.

• Pants must fit at the waist and be no more than one size larger than the student’s measured size.

• Pants, capris, and shorts must be hemmed. No seams are to be cut or hems unraveled. Hem of pants should not drag on the ground (as per Board Policy).

• NO: spandex leggings, sweatpants, athletic attire, sleepwear or pajamas bottoms.

Skirts/Skorts/Shorts:

• Solid color or uniform plaid. Pleated or flat front only.

• Shorts with center split pleats in front and back. No athletic shorts. Shorts must be worn at mid-thigh.

• No spandex. No shorter than fingertip length, no rolled waistbands.

Socks/Tights: Socks may not be worn higher than mid-calf.

Prohibited for all students (according to WVUSD Board Policy 5132):

• No open-toed or backless shoes; shoelaces must be tied.

• Clothing and personal items (e.g., backpacks, bags, water bottles) must not display crude, vulgar, profane, sexually suggestive content, or promote drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or prejudice.

• Hats, caps, and head coverings may not be worn indoors unless for religious practice.

• Clothing must fully cover undergarments. Prohibited: see-through or fishnet fabrics, halter tops, off-the-shoulder or low-cut tops, bare midriffs, and skirts/shorts above mid-thigh.

• Gym shorts are only permitted in PE classes.

• Hair must be clean, neat, and not use coloring that drips when wet.

• No unsafe or gang-related accessories or attire, including spikes, chains, bandanas, oversized or sagging pants, hanging belts, or insignia-related items.

• No military or camouflage clothing, except for approved youth organization uniforms on meeting days (Ed Code 35183).

Dress Code Guidelines Non-Uniform Days:

South Pointe’s dress code for non-uniform days provides students freedom and choice regarding the clothes they wear to school, while seeking to foster and support an academic environment. With this in mind, students are prohibited from any form of dress, which might:

1. Affect the safety of that student or others.

2. Disrupt the learning process.

3. Indicate affiliation with or admiration of negative social influences such as gangs, cults, and / or substance abuse.

4. Allow for the concealment of anything that should not be at school.

Students should come to school dressed appropriately for all activities and practice good hygiene to support their learning.
